WHY DO SPEAKERS NEED TO BE RUN IN?

Because speakers are composed of different components —cone, suspension, spider, magnet, basket, etc— and those components do not defy the laws of mechanics or physics.

Loudspeakers straight out of the box may not perform at their optimum level as they are not able to reproduce all the frequencies that are present in the sound spectrum. In order to do so, new speakers need to be run in during a certain period of time, or more specifically, both the components of the cone and the suspension need time to be loosened up to reach their full capacity.

After they break in, speakers will be able to detect better low-frequencies, their ability to deliver wider dynamic range will increase and the lowest frequencies in the sound spectrum will be reproduced. ( As a result, )Mids will sound more percussing and accurate.

The same goes for high-frequencies, which improvement occurs more quickly due to a short articulation process where the components are rapidly balanced, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.

These instructions apply as well to Hi-Fi systems than to monitoring ones, to Home-Cinemas or even headphones; running in accounts for all kinds of speakers.

Concerning the break in of amps, cables or other electronic components, there is no need for running in to this extent as the laws of physics apply way more quickly to the electronic components than to the mechanical ones. The optimum heating temperature is then generally reached a few minutes only after the first run-in signals.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKES TO RUN IN SPEAKERS?

It takes time, a lot of time, to run in loudspeakers with a musical track and you have no guarantee that all the frequencies are really stimulated as the resonance frequencies are unique to each loudspeaker.

Likewise, a simple white noise will not enable the speakers to reach their full capacity, as well as mere sine waves will not cover all the frequencies present in your system because they do not provide the harmonics required.

Plus, the larger your speaker diameter size is the longer it takes to your loudspeakers to break in and to be efficient. A subwoofer’s optimum elasticity is not the same than a mid-high range one.

A professional running in is then necessary if you want your loudspeakers to perform at their optimum level.

HOW TO RUN IN SPEAKERS THE RIGHT WAY?

The best way to run in your speakers is to send a signal that will enable the mechanical components to break in.  If a mere musical signal can indeed run in your speakers, it will take though a lot of time for the cone to soften up.

To deal with this issue, professionals are widely using signals that they broadcast carefully so that the speakers perform at their best. These signals can also be generated and wired out of phase, which means that from the time you will position your speakers facing each other the articulation of the cone of your first speaker will be reversed compared to the articulation of your second speaker’s cone, providing the system the perfect conditions to break in at a low volume.

As a result, your loudspeakers can break in at high-powered signals without the need for you to leave the room or to inform your neighbors!
